People quit, get fired, or laid-off all the time, regardless of the state of the economy.

But it is the HR and Payroll Departments that usually bears the brunt of having to not only pay the outgoing employee, but have to deal with severance and benefits packages, final paychecks, and comply with the variety of compliance regulations such as COBRA and the new Stimulus Act.

In addition, payroll personnel are forced to deal with tax issues they may not have encountered previously. For instance, federal and state laws have numerous requirements that must be met from both a legal and a tax standpoint. Failure on your part to properly do this can result in heavy penalties.

Thus, it is important for payroll personnel to understand and properly comply with their obligations to properly pay – and abide by the plethora of laws affecting – terminated employees.

About Your Speaker

Dayna Reum, CPP, FPC, is a payroll professional with over 15 years experience in both teaching and handling payroll.

Ms. Reum holds both a Certified Payroll Professional and a Fundamental Payroll Certification designation, and is a frequent presenter on various payroll topics. Dayna has worked for companies such as PetSmart, Honeywell, and the American Payroll Association.

Dayna also serves on the National American Payroll Association on the national Strategic Leadership Task Force, has received a Citation of Merit and is a Gold Pin member of the APA. She is certified in HR hiring and firing practices, and is a Six-Sigma Greenbelt.
